Blue Sturts from top of Pildappa Rock

This Tour departs from your accommodation in Ceduna at 8am and travels via the Eyre Hwy through the grain producing heart of Eyre Peninsula to Minnipa, Pildappa Rock and the Organ-pipes in the Gawler Ranges.

Edward John Eyre passed through this “Granite Country” in 1839 and named many of the features.

The first Settlers arrived in the 1860’s, and you will see how they constructed concrete gutters around the base of Pildappa Rock to harvest the precious water into dams and tanks.
From the top of this granite inselberg you can cast a chameleon eye over the surrounding broad-acre farmland. To the North the hazy blue of the Blue Sturts and the Gawler Ranges in the distance.

After morning tea in the picnic ground,we travel on through red sand and Mallee and Black Oak country to the ancient volcanic rocks of the Gawler Ranges. Formed over 1500 million years ago these weathered, rounded Hills have a contrasting angular rock formation, volcanic rhyolite, locally known as Organ-pipes:-

Looking back down the gully

A short walk along a gully through divergent vegetation will bring you to an area of walls of this angular rock formation and a seasonal water-fall and ponds.

Lunch is provided in the shady vehicle parking area.

The best time to visit is while the weather is cool between April and October, preferably in Spring for the display of wildflowers and seasonal water-falls.

Returning via Poochera to have afternoon tea in the Park and read the story of the Dinosaur Ants.
